Atletico Madrid – Levante

15th April 2018   ·   0 Comments

Atletico Madrid looked as quite an underdog in a local derby game last weekend, when the team visited Real Madrid but managed to remain undefeated in a 1:1 draw. As it was expected, they were defending mostly trying to do more concrete things via counter attacks and it paid out for them.

Real had more of the ball possession, also better chances created as goalkeeper Oblak saved his team more than couple of times – however must be said that both sides were influenced with their European duties. Ronaldo brought the home team into the lead in 53rd minute, but the guests managed to reply just few minutes later via Griezmann.

Even though the hosts looked better, as the time progressed neither of the teams was willing to risk a lot. This way Atletico kept three points lead in comparison to third placed Valencia and four in comparison to Real. As for the Europa League, they suffered narrow 1:0 defeat to Sporting on the road, but are progressing further thanks to 2:1 aggregate victory.

Home side should be playing in 4-4-2 formation with Gameiro and Griezmann as forwards. Defensive midfielder Thomas Partey (28/3) is suspended for this one after accumulation of yellow cards. Left back Filipe Luis (17/1) remains injured. Doubtful are left full back Lucas Hernandez and forward Diego Costa.

Levante is on some decent run now, since the team comes from fifth consecutive game without defeat. Moreover, they collected three victories during these five rounds run, but are still far away from a safe ending of the season.

They managed to get important three pointer in a home clash last Sunday afternoon when the team welcomed relegation candidates from Las Palmas and won with a 2:1 result. The game itself wasn’t that interesting and must be said that it could have ended way differently on some other day.

The guests actually had more of the ball possession and even chances created, however hosts celebrated thanks to goals from Coke and Campana (second one during the added time).

After such a good run, the side escaped from the relegation zone but are still only five points ahead of relegating placed Deportivo and need to take care in next (home) matches most likely.

Guests are set to play in 4-4-2 formation as well, using Marti and Pazzini as their forwards. Right back Coke (12/2) and midfielder Ruben Rochina (3/0) are both suspended for the visitors.

Goalkeeper Raul Fernandez (11/0), right back Ivan Lopez (3/0), left backs Tono (12/0), Antonio Luna (18/0), defensive midfielder Cheick Doukoure (19/1) and forward Emmanuel Boateng (20/2) are all sidelined due injuries.

  • Atletico have won their last 8 home matches against Levante.

With Europa League duties behind them and with busy schedule, I can’t see Atletico here outscoring the opponents completely. Visitors will try to defend for as long as possile, while Atletico is surely able to prevail in the end. Another typical 1-0, 2-0 victory in front of own fans is on the cards here with some valuable odds.
