Strasbourg – Saint Etienne

14th April 2018   ·   0 Comments

Strasbourg didn’t get a victory last time out away to Angers, but the team still can be satisfied with final 1:1 result as they looked like quite an underdog prior the game. Home team have entered the game much better and took the lead already in sixth minute via Ekambi while the guests had to work hard in order to level up the result.

Since that moment it looked like Angers was satisfied with the result and left ball possession to their opponents, who were more and more dangerous as the time progressed. They probably could have scored even more than once in second, but will be happy to take the point thanks to a goal from penalty kick via Martin in 71st minute.

This was seventh consecutive game without a victory for Strasbourg, third consecutive draw as the side now stands at sixteenth position. They are now five points above play-out placed Troyes and surely need that victory, not only for salvation but to improve the morale as well.

Blayac and Bahoken should lead the attack of the home team in 4-3-1-2 formation, together with Corgnet as offensive midfielder. Right back Dimitri Fouquier is back again in the team being fully fit.

Left back Abdallah Ndour (3/0) is suspended, while injured remain central back Kader Mangane (18/1) and offensive Martin Terrier (24/3). Forward Joia Nuno Da Costa (25/4) and right back Kenny Lala (28/3) are both doubtful.

St Etienne have obviously improved in recent months since the re-start of the league, as the team especially surprised last time out when they took a point in front of own fans against PSG in a 1:1 draw last Friday evening.

Cabella brought them into the lead in sixteenth minute and they even missed a penalty kick later on, while the Parisians stood playing with a man less since 41st minute when Kimpempe got red carded.

Visitors leveled up in second minute of additional time of the game via an own goal, but the overall impression is that they weren’t up to their level. Must be said that the hosts were surely a better side even in first halftime when they played 11 vs 11 men on the field.

St Etienne is now close to Europa League ticket as well, being four points behind fifth placed Rennes and can’t afford to drop points here. Away from home they are undefeated in last five matches, counting three victories and two draws.

Guests should play in 4-2-3-1 formation with Hamouma as central striker, plus Bamba, Cabella and Monnet-Paquet as offensive midfielders. Left back Ronael Pierre Gabriel (15/0) is injured. Other full back Cheikh M’Bengue (7/0) is doubtful coming from injury.

  • St Etienne are undefeated in their last 10 matches (Ligue 1).

With St Etienne improving step by step and looking rather decent now, but also with Strasbourg playing at home and being in need of points, I can see this game being quite an open one from both teams. Visitors are doing well in attack and looking slightly stronger, however hosts are not quite safe at the moment and will be going for a victory here too.
