Coventry – Grimsby

23rd March 2018   ·   0 Comments

It was a very important three pointer for the players of Coventry last Saturday afternoon when they visited Crewe and managed to fight out a 1:2 victory. The visitors took the lead very early, back in fifth minute via an own goal in much more interesting first halftime.

Hosts managed to reply in 33rd minute thanks to a goal from Bowery, but the guests reached the second just just before the halftime via Bayliss. Home team tried to respond further on and had some chances, but the scoreline never changed. It was fifth consecutive game without defeat for Coventry which is great improvement after their poor run in early February.

They are now keeping the seventh play-off position but with just a point more than closest followers from Lincoln and Swindon and are surely in a must win situation here.

Forward Jodi Jones (19/5) is now more of a long term absentee, while injured also remains midfielder Tony Andreu (5/0). Other than that, hosts should have close to fully fit squad for this one.

Grimsby Town, on the other side, were quite outplayed in previous round when the team visited Lincoln City also on last Saturday’s afternoon. Promotion chasing hosts have entered the game much better and looked dominant in first. They needed only eight minute to score all three goals, from 31th to 39th minute.

Goalscorers were Freeclington, Green and Wharton with the guests also replying in the first halftime via penalty kick taken by Davies. Second part of the game wasn’t that interesting, as the guests tried to respond back, but the hosts were doing well in the defense and scoreline never changed.

With this result, players of Grimsby town continued seventeen games run without a victory in League One (having only five points earned since mid-December). The side is still six points ahead of relegating placed Chesterfield, but would surely benefit from something here.

Forward Mallik Wilks is back in the team. Central defender Karleigh Osborne (10/0), midfielder Luke Summerfield (32/0), forward Simeon Jackson (3/1) and left back Paul Dixon (26/1) are injured and out. Left back Andrew Fox is doubtful after picking a knock against Lincoln.

  • Grimsby has five consecutive defeats away from home.

It looks like Coventry got back to positive ways when it was needed the most. With a morale boosting victory on the road last week, they enter this one being complete favorites. Grimsby needs points as well, but looking at their form there’s almost close to nothing they can do in order to stay undefeated.
