Northampton – Shrewsbury

19th March 2018   ·   0 Comments

League One action for me on Tuesday night. The game will be played at Sixfields Stadium and will kick off at 19:45 UK time. The game will be played between Northampton Town and Shrewsbury Town.

The home side I watched yesterday (Saturday) as Rotherham United ripped them apart. Northampton didn’t look great and to say they were at home they seemed to have set up not to lose the game, however, this clearly didn’t work as Rotherham were able to easily break them down and created many chances. Northampton find themselves in real pressure now and are currently sat in 21st in the table (relegation zone).

This is only on goal difference, however, still they have a lot to do as a team to get out of this. The teams around Northampton all have games in hand over them, especially Rochdale who have 3 games still to play.

Northampton have managed to win 10 times this season along with 9 draws. They have also lost 18 games which doesn’t stack right with me. They try and play a 4-2-3-1 formation which when I look at their squad, I don’t think they have players capable of getting themselves out of this dog fight they are in. I do like their manager and thought he would have done better than he has.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was a great player in his days and I’m sure if at the right club he could have a lot to offer. Northampton head into the game having not won since a 3-1 away victory over AFC Wimbledon back on the 10th February.

The away side are flying at the minute and the game tomorrow is a huge opportunity to be able to sneak back to the top of the table with this being their game in hand over Blackburn Rovers. The Shrews are just 2 points behind Rovers, however, a win here will see them go 1 point in-front with a fan worse goal difference.

With their Goals For/Against not being as good as Blackburn, they really need to rely on points. Blackburn have 13 goals better than the Shrews. No one would have expected Shrewsbury to be where they are in the league this season. Manager Paul Hurst has done an amazing job with the players he has available and deserves a lot of credit with such a small squad and small budget.

What stands out to me in the Shrews defensive record. They have conceded just 27 goals from 36 league games. They don’t score a great deal of goals (49) however, they seem to get the job done and that is all that matters.

Shrewsbury head into the game on the back of a 5 game unbeaten run. They have drawn one of these games vs Gillingham, however, the other 4 they have won (cup game vs Yeovil) + Away wins at Charlton and Scunthorpe and then home wins vs Walsall! They look in a confident mood and their win on the weekend vs Scunthorpe was a sign of their hard work and dedication.

Scunthorpe went a goal up at home after just 8 minutes, however, Paul Hurst and his players managed to draw level in the 51st minute and then a Payne penalty for the Shrews secured all 3 points in the 59th minute.

Confidence will be high and expect that Shrewsbury will not lose this game. I expect them to go out and get the 3 points they need to move to the top of the league, however, I think the odds of 1.65 with BetVictor for Shrewsbury +0AH is a great price to protect the draw.
